14% of energy consumption on Earth attributed to package managers installing other package managers
According to the latest Climate Change Reports, nearly 14% of total energy consumption on Earth is attributed solely to package managers installing other package managers as dependencies. For example, npm installing yarn or pip installing pip3 — a common occurrence in everyday lives of millions of software developers.
Industry experts are worried as much as climate experts, but, unfortunately, conclude that this fundamental property of computer science cannot be changed, and the need for installing new package managers will only grow in the future.
Until true fusion reactor is realized, a temporary remedy may be introduced in the upcoming years: regional rolling blackouts for package repositories. For example, all North American developers will be able to perform package-related operations on Mondays and Thursdays only, while their European and Asian counterparts taking up other days of the week.
